As Students Head Back to the Classroom, Everyone Should Remember Pedestrian Safety

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/07/11 -- As part of the back-to-school routine, CAA encourages parents to talk to their children about pedestrian safety, and to lead by example all year long.

Pedestrian injuries are the primary cause of injury-related deaths for children 14 years of age and younger, according to Safe Kids Canada. Young children have not yet developed the skills they need to judge the speed or distance of traffic and they can be easily distracted, especially when around their friends.

"With the increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic around school zones across Canada, it is more important than ever to make sure that our kids are aware of and practice safe pedestrian habits," said Jeff Walker, CAA vice president, public affairs. "What better way to teach them then by carrying out these safety practices as parents?"

As students make their way back to the classroom this fall, many will be assisted by one of the 100,000 dedicated student volunteers who participate in the Canadian Automobile Association's School Safety Patrol program.

CAA is proud to have been there since the inception of the School Safety Patrol program in Canada in the 1920s, supporting local community-based programs across the nation. It remains the largest sponsoring body of a Patrol program in the country and CAA Patrollers dedicate more than 5 million hours annually to ensure their fellow students commute to and from school safely.

In order to ensure everyone makes it to and from school safely, here are some helpful Pedestrian Safety Tips:
