Rowing Down the St. Lawrence, From City to Ocean: Mylene Paquette Docks in the Magdalen Islands
(firmenpresse) - HAVRE-AUBERT, QUEBEC -- (Marketwire) -- 09/09/11 -- Welcomed by a cacophony of foghorns and surrounded by pleasure crafts, Mylene Paquette, the ocean rower and St. Lawrence River Ambassador for the David Suzuki Foundation, rowed into the small harbour of Havre-Aubert, in the Magdalen Islands. This final port of call marks the end of a 78-day journey on the St. Lawrence River. After sailing out of Montreal on June 25, 2011, Mylene will have docked in some thirty municipalities all along the River right down to Anse-a-Beaufils, in the Gaspe Peninsula, which she left on August 31 to reach her final destination. The welcome of the "Madelinots" left her with very warm feelings and the rower says she's totally ready for her officially sanctioned crossing of the North Atlantic in 2012. "The St. Lawrence is a magnificent waterway that hides a number of difficulties! I'm really happy that I could enjoy such beauty while training, in addition to all the support provided by the people who live daily near the River and whose knowledge allowed me to arrive here in the Islands...", said Mylene.
Sailing down the St. Lawrence River was the first phase of the Odycean project - the crossing of the North Atlantic in a rowboat, done solo and without any assistance. The project aims to raise awareness about the impacts of human activities on marine ecosystems. It was a form of training as well as a test of her rowboat and rigging in anticipation of her crossing in 2012 of the Atlantic Ocean, a first for North America. "I also wanted to test my resistance to loneliness! But from Montreal to Anse-a-Beaufils, I never found myself alone! So I took the opportunity to collect as much info as possible about the River... Then again, as soon as I set out for the Magdalen Islands, things were rather different. During that week I got a taste of conditions similar to those I'll encounter in the ocean in a few months and I certainly experienced loneliness," admits Mylene.
Feelings of loneliness soon faded away on the jetty in the harbour of Havre-Aubert where a rather imposing reception committee and her main sponsor, Cushe Footwear Canada, were waiting for her.
