Transmode announces standards-based coherent 100G strategy for metro and regional networks
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Stockholm - 13(th) September 2011 - Transmode, a global supplier of packet
optical networking solutions, today announced the company's strategy for 100G
optical networking solutions based on coherent technology that specifically
addresses the challenges faced by network operators planning 100G deployments in
metro and regional networks.
"We set ourselves the challenge of rethinking 100G from a metro and regional
perspective," said Karl Thedéen, Transmode's CEO. "We needed to ensure that the
approach we took to 100G integration was the best for our existing customer base
and was very attractive to prospective customers. These networks require a
standards based, cost effective and compact solution that works on existing
infrastructure including advanced ROADM-based networks. Customers also require a
simple pay as you grow approach to adding 100G."
The Transmode 100G Metro solution uses standard PM-QPSK optics with coherent
detection to provide 100Gbit/s on a single wavelength and up to 10x the capacity
of today's 10G systems, which is significantly more than some alternative non-
standard modulation formats. It also introduces stackable capabilities to the
TM-Series which provides customers with a pay-as-you-grow approach to their
100G investments. Furthermore, it includes a new 100G plug-in unit that is fully
integrated with the widely deployed TM-Series. The 100G plug-in unit has a
common host-board and application specific plug-in daughter-boards on the client
side that can configure the unit as a transponder, muxponder or regenerator.
This greatly simplifies network design, ordering, deployment and spare part
management and also allows easy upgrades to additional configurations in the
future.
"The optical networking industry is rapidly moving towards 100G solutions for
high capacity networking options, although the vast majority of these solutions
and initial deployments are primarily targeted towards core network
applications," said Andrew Schmitt, Directing Analyst, Optical at Infonetics
Research. "We predict that these core networks will quickly move to
predominantly 100G once the technology reaches the right price points. However,
we also predict that metro and regional networks will gradually migrate to a
10G/40G/100G mix, creating a totally different set of challenges for the network
operators".
"To optimize price/performance for the metro and regional markets, our approach
has been to focus on standard 100G optical technology and a solution for
distances up to 750 km. In parallel, we will also provide a version for
distances up to 1500 km based on the same technology to cover the wider market,"
said Sten Nordell, Transmode's CTO. "Our approach allows us to create a solution
that provides investment protection for existing customers and is cost effective
when adding anything from a small number of 100G wavelengths to existing
10G/40G networks right up to a fully loaded 100G system that enables 8 Tbit/s of
traffic on a fiber pair. In addition, the solution is highly compact and uses
only 75% of the space required for the current generation of 100G systems. All
of which make this solution ideally focused on metro and regional applications."
Customer trials of the new solution commence at the start of 2012 with network
deployments from the middle of 2012.
About Transmode
Transmode is a global provider of packet-optical networking solutions that
enable fixed line and mobile network operators to cost effectively address the
capacity needs created by the rapid growth in video and data traffic. These
solutions are important building blocks in next-generation high-speed optical
networks that support services such as broadband backhaul, mobile data backhaul,
video delivery services and cloud computing. Transmode's solutions are based
onWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and packet optical transport
technologies, which are designed to increase the capacity, flexibility and
functionality of optical metro core and metro access networks. Transmode's
Intelligent WDM (iWDM(TM)) approach gives key advantages to customers, such as
ultra-low latency, low power consumption and innovative network design.
Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden and listed on the NASDAQ OMX Stockholm
Exchange (TRMO) the company's global organization of local teams and value-added
resellers cover all major global markets. Since 2000 the company has installed
more than 20,000 systems for over 300 fixed and mobile network operators,
service providers, large enterprises and public institutions in over 40
countries across the globe.
