Florence to Siena: What Are Your Travel Options?

Florence to Siena: What Are Your Travel Options?

ID: 643961

Travelling from Florence to Siena is relatively simple but should you go by train, bus or private tour? The tour definitely gets you bang for your buck.

(firmenpresse) - Siena is the second largest city in Tuscany and, famed for its incredible architecture, Renaissance palaces and medieval churches, not to mention its stunning red stone buildings, it is a place that once visited is never forgotten. Just 85km from Florence, this city offers the perfect day trip. But how do you get from Florence to Siena? You are going to want the most convenient and time effective method of transport if you’re to make the most of your time in the city, so here we take you through your options.

Travel Options: Florence to Siena

Train

Trains in Italy are pretty efficient and offer a fast, comfortable travel option. That said, travelling between the two main Tuscan cities is the exception to the rule. Direct trains can take 90 minutes but most require a change, which means the journey is lengthened by at least half an hour. There are no high-speed trains that travel this route, although the regional ones do take you through some spectacular countryside.

If you choose this mode of transport, you will travel from Santa Maria Novella in Florence and arrive at the Stazione di Siena, which is actually outside of the main city walls at the bottom of a hill. This means that you will start your visit with a 20 minute walk up the hill or alternatively a steady ride up the station escalator.

Bus

Taking a bus from Florence to Siena is another viable option. They take around 75 minutes and are less expensive than trains. You will get dropped off in the city centre, in Piazza Gramsci, which is a big help! The only downside really is that the buses do take the winding roads that are also quite hilly and if you suffer from travel sickness, you may not want to consider this bus ride.

Check timetables before you plan your trip and it is also recommended that you buy your tickets before you embark.

Take a Tour

When you have limited time and want to make the most of the hours you have, taking a private tour from Florence to Siena is your best bet. Many of these tours include a stop in the gorgeous town of San Gimignano too, which is an added bonus.

Instead of doing all the logistical organisation yourself and trying to interpret timetables and connecting trains etc, you can just roll up at the specified meeting place from where you are escorted for your entire day. A local tour guide will regale you with all the information about the attractions and take you on a comprehensive walking tour of the city on arrival. Some tours include self guided options, which is ideal if you enjoy exploring on your own.

All tours are slightly different, but on the drive itself many will allow you the opportunity to stop for photographs and even enjoy a morning coffee at a local cafe.

Whichever way you decide to travel from Florence to Siena, it is good to know that you have a choice. While the trains and buses offer a budget option, the private tours are definitely the best way to make the most of any day trip in Tuscany.
