Autumn in Cinque Terre: What to Know Before You Go

Planning a trip to Italy? Here’s what to expect around autumn in Cinque Terre, one of the most beautiful places in the country.

(firmenpresse) - There’s never a wrong time to visit Italy and anyone who’s experienced the culture, history, art, landscape and food of the country knows there’s something to enjoy throughout the year. Each season has its own personality and highlights, so it’s up to you when you think is most suitable for a holiday based on your personal circumstances. Of course budget and time constraints are probably the main factors, but there are also numerous other considerations, including availability of flights and accommodation and the timing of events or activities.

For those planning a trip to one of the most popular places in Italy, we’ll focus on what you can expect around autumn in Cinque Terre.

Autumn in Cinque Terre

Question: when exactly is autumn in Cinque Terre?
Answer: the months of September, October and November.

September and October are often cited as the best time to visit (the shoulder season). While it’s still warm, there are nowhere near as many crowds as in the summer, which makes it a little more pleasant if you prefer not to share some of the most beautiful views in the world with quite so many people. As well as that, you’ll be able to secure cheaper flights and accommodation; so while the majority of people tend to visit on a day trip from Florence, this is a wonderful time to consider staying a night or two in one of the five villages.

But whether you are on a day trip or lucky enough to stay longer, it’s much easier to get around the streets of the villages – which can get quite crowded during peak times. Even though it’s virtually impossible to dampen the charm of the villages, with thinner crowds it’s easier to immerse in the local ambience and even pretend you’re a local yourself!

Notes on the Weather

Autumn in Cinque Terre comes straight after summer, naturally, so there’s definitely some residual heat, particularly in September. As the season progresses, nights get chillier and you’ll definitely need a jacket if you’re there in the early morning or into the evening. As a guide the average minimums and maximums are as follows.

September: 17°- 25°
October: 13°- 20°
November: 15°- 19°

Note: October is usually the rainiest month, but it tends to be sporadic and there is still plenty of sun so it’s not enough to ruin your experience.

What’s On?

Most people’s main focus is on walking sections of the famous trail that links the five villages (which is much more comfortable with the cooler temperatures), but there are other draw cards for choosing autumn in Cinque Terre as well.

September coincides with the harvesting of the local grapes (the main ones being Vermentino, Albarola and Bosco), so there’ll be plenty of chances to get some tastings in. You can book on to a tour of a winery, but also many of the local restaurants offer special events around the harvest.

The Anchovy Festival, in Monterosso, usually held in the third week of September, is an absolutely wonderful celebration of this tasty little fish, which is abundant in the waters around the region. But these are anchovies as you’ve never tasted them before, served up in a variety of traditional ways and unbelievably delicious - completely befitting their very own festival!

If you’re planning to visit this gorgeous region, autumn in Cinque Terre is most definitely an appealing time to come. If you prefer slightly cooler weather and slightly fewer crowds, look at the months of September, October and even into November and you won’t be disappointed.
