How to Get to Cinque Terre on a Day Trip from Florence

ID: 654179

Are you wondering how to get to Cinque Terre? Here is some advice on the many different travel options to help you plan your trip.

(firmenpresse) - Situated only a short distance away from Florence, the Cinque Terre is the perfect day trip destination. The towns, namely Monterosso al Mare, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore, and Vernazza, sit on cliff tops high above the sea. Whilst this makes for some truly breathtaking views, it can also make reaching them a bit of a challenge. Thankfully there are a number of options to look at when considering the best way to visit.

Below is some advice on how to get to Cinque Terre.

Hire a Car
Driving to the region can be tricky for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the roads leading there are narrow, meandering and perched atop cliffs, so the journey should not be attempted by inexperienced drivers.

Secondly, parking spaces are few and far between in the towns. If you do happen to spot a free space, the likelihood is that it is reserved exclusively for residents.

However, driving can provide you with some added freedom and so, if you’re confident that this is the right way for you to visit, the best guidance on driving would be to park close to La Spezia Centrale train station and use the train system to travel between villages.

Train

The train is a good option when considering how to get to Cinque Terre. There is a direct service to La Spezia Centrale from Florence Campo di Marti station, however it does not run all year round so do check when planning your trip. Alternatively, there is a service from Florence Santa Maria Novella station that changes at Pisa Centrale before arriving in La Spezia. Once you arrive, take the local train called the Cinque Terre Express in the direction of Levanto. The train runs every 20 minutes from mid March to 1st November and stops in all five villages. A Cinque Terre Pass will get you unlimited access to each of the towns for the entire day.

Do bear in mind, however, that the entire journey can take upwards of three hours from Florence. This, combined with multiple changes and frequent delays, can make getting to the towns by rail quite stressful.

Boat

Boats offer an alternative and utterly stunning view of the area. There is a ferry that travels between the towns, allowing you to see each of these Lingurian gems in all their beauty. However, most boat trips only run from 1st April to 1st November, from La Spezia and Levanto, so be sure to check with tour operators when looking at how to get to Cinque Terre by boat.

Guided Tour

Guided tours are undoubtedly the best way to explore the area. Not only can you ensure safe and efficient travel, you will also enjoy the benefits of a local guide who can show you the best parts of the towns. This really takes all the stress of travelling in a foreign country away, leaving you able to wholly appreciate your trip.

You will be taken by coach to the highest village in the area. From here, you will depart the bus and your experienced guide can take you on beautiful hikes around and between the villages. (If you do choose to hike, be sure to wear your most comfortable walking shoes.) The footpaths around the towns can be hard work at times, although the stunning views are well worth the exercise. There are, of course, options to enjoy guided tours without the walking for those who prefer to relax on the beach or sample the delicious local food and drink.

No matter which way you choose to explore this stunning region, there’s no doubt you’ll leave agreeing with everyone who visits: it truly is one of the most beautiful places in the world.
