Digital Lumens Co-Founder and CTO Brian Chemel Named to the Boston Business Journal's "40-Under-40"

(firmenpresse) - BOSTON, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/14/11 -- , the leader in intelligent lighting systems, today announced that its co-founder and CTO, Brian Chemel, has been named to the Boston Business Journal's "40-Under-40" -- a list that honors executives who are under the age of 40 and who represent the best Massachusetts has to offer in the innovative business and nonprofit communities.

With a deep background in LEDs and robotics, Chemel co-founded Digital Lumens in 2008 to develop new, ultra-efficient LED lighting systems that leverage system-wide intelligence to maximize lighting energy efficiency for warehouse and industrial environments. By integrating sensors and software-based controls into a complete lighting system, lights become an efficient, "managed resource" rather than a massive energy and budget drain. As the company's co-founder and CTO, Brian leads product strategy, intellectual property and software development efforts, leveraging his extensive technical and entrepreneurial background in the field of solid-state lighting.

Prior to Digital Lumens, Chemel was a technical lead and development team manager as Director of Control Product Development at Color Kinetics, the pioneer of intelligent LED illumination systems, which was acquired by Philips Lighting in 2007. He came to the lighting industry via robotics, having designed autonomous mobile robotic systems as a researcher at the National Robotics Engineering Consortium for clients including DARPA and the U.S. Department of Energy. He has also co-authored more than a dozen US and international patents in the fields of solid-state lighting, embedded controls, and robotics, and holds a Master of Science in Robotics and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, both from Carnegie Mellon University.

"For the past 14 years, the Boston Business Journal's 40-Under-40 competition has honored the area's energetic executives younger than 40 who are paving their way successfully through the local business world," Business Journal Publisher Christopher McIntosh said. "The standout performers aren't just trailblazers in their respective professional realms, but also significant players in helping their communities grow through charity work."

Digital Lumens has raised $25 million to date from investors with active energy practices including Flybridge Capital Partners, Stata Venture Partners and Black Coral Capital -- and has rapidly taken a leadership position in the intelligent lighting market. The company's innovative, systems-based approach and superior products are meeting customers' needs, while revolutionizing the economics of industrial lighting. Boston-based installations include the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center's (MassCEC) (WTTC), which opened in May 2011 and is the nation's first commercial large blade test facility, multiple cold storage facilities, and , a new cleantech incubator in the seaport area, dubbed the city's "Innovation District" by Mayor Tom Menino.

The 2011 40-Under-40 winners will be recognized at an evening reception to be held at the State Room on Thursday, October 6th. More information is available here:
