(firmenpresse) - The first stage of the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) is the primary treatment. The process has three stages. These are the secondary treatment (also known as the biological stage) and the primary treatment (also known as the physical stage). The biological stage involves bacteria that consume contaminants and biodegradable organics such as carbon and phosphorus. Dead bacteria and organic residues are then converted into sludge. Excess sludge is moved to settling tanks where it is settled before being transported to the next stage of the process, known as the digestion process. This process produces biogas that is used to generate energy.

The process of infection

There are a variety of ways to disinfect water in a water treatment plant. Raw water can contain contaminants that could interfere with the disinfection process. These contaminants may include organic and inorganic molecule as well as particulates and microorganisms. The quantity of each component differs in different regions, because of differences in geochemistry, as well as between surface and ground water sources. Each process requires different amounts of disinfectant to clean the water. The dosage is calculated on the basis of the difference. Moreover, different contaminants exert different "demands" on disinfectants, and greater demands require higher concentrations.

The first requirement is to select an indicator microorganism that is present in feces and will eventually disappear in the aquatic environment. The second requirement is to compare the reaction of the process of disinfection to that of the pathogen. It may be a microorganism that is an indicator, but it's not meant to be a pathogen. To ensure that the disinfectant works the dosage has to be precise and stable.

Screening

Screening is a method used in wastewater treatment plants in order to remove solids. The screenings may be of various kinds, based on the kind of wastewater being treated and the flow method. Based on the type of material that is being removed from wastewater, the screening can be accomplished using filters or grit chambers. Pumps are used to remove smaller solids. Once removed, the screens must be clean to allow the disposal. However, some types of screenings may not be necessary.

Fine screening is a crucial step in treatment. Fine screens have openings smaller than six millimeters. The fine screens are usually comprised of a perforated screen or wedgewire component. The screenings are then deposited on the skid plate before being discharged into a sluice pipe or container. If a screening process is not required it is possible to do it manually.

Sand filter

A sand filter in the treatment of wastewater offers a variety of advantages. Its high-quality filter media reduces the amount of contaminants in the wastewater. It requires little maintenance and operation. There are not many moving parts, pumps, or manpower. Apart from reducing energy and water costs, a sand filter can process wastewater at an impressive volume and speed. Its comparatively simple design makes it a very popular option for wastewater treatment.

There are many types of sand filters. Some are designed for small groups and clusters of houses, while others are designed for large businesses and institutions. To remove solids from the wastewater it has to be treated before the sand filter can be installed. A septic tank, aerobic unit or the combination of both may be utilized to pre-treat wastewater. Additional steps can include screens and filters. After the pretreatment the sand filter may be utilized.

Anaerobic bacteria

Wastewater treatment plants usually contain anaerobic microorganisms, which are primarily found in sewage. These bacteria thrive in sewer environments and are able to perform various fermentation processes. They produce hydrogen sulfide, methane, and volatile organic compounds. The most well-known strains of anaerobic bacterium are sulfate-reducing bacteria. They are usually found in the Desulfobacter and Desulfococcus genera.

In a wastewater treatment plant, anaerobic microorganisms help to break down waste by producing usable methane. They produce carbon dioxide and water and are found in colonies known as flocs. This mechanical action helps to keep them suspended. This process reduces the amount of chemical used to treat wastewater, which is great news for the environment. Anaerobic bacteria in a wastewater treatment plant also have a lower cost which is why many cities are shifting to this method of treatment.

Centrifuge

Centrifuges can be utilized in a facility for treatment of waste water to separate the liquid from the solid phase of the liquid stream. Centrifuging is also a method to compress the sludge before attempting to discharge it into the treatment facility for sewage. The centrifuge can separate the sludge into sludge cakes that have been dewatered and a clarified liquid, known as the centrate.

In a composting facility, one university in California was having issues with leachate containing high levels of solids. The waste water also contained a small amount of oil. To solve this issue the university used Dolphin Centrifuge and its Sharples P-3000 Decanter. The machine was able make the flour sludge thicker from the wastewater stream from a tortilla factory. The resulting thickening of the water was shown to reduce costs for disposal and hauling by more than 60%. Furthermore, the separated water was clean enough to be used in the sewer.
