Food Safety Confidence in Canada on the Rise
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/15/11 -- Canadians remain confident in Canada's food safety system, according to results from a recent survey conducted by Leger Marketing in the spring of 2011. Sixty-eight per cent of Canadians gave the system a favourable confidence rating. That is up from 65 per cent in 2010 and 60 per cent in 2008.
"The Canadian food safety system works well and the majority of Canadians acknowledge that. They have confidence in Canadian standards, regulations and processes," said Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.
Food safety continues to be a top priority of the Government of Canada. In budget 2011, a commitment of $100 million over five years was made to invest in inspector training, tools and technology, and science capacity.
The report also indicates that Canadians trust the government's ability to manage food recalls, recognizing that recalls show that the system is working. Over the last five years, the average number of food recall incidents has remained relatively stable, averaging 226 per year. Canadians also acknowledge that everyone has a role to play in food safety, including farmers, industry, government and consumers.
The results from public opinion research are used to help the CFIA better meet the needs of consumers and stakeholders.
