AMA and CAA Launch Website to Educate on the Dangers of Distracted Driving

(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/15/11 -- With the province's new distracted driving legislation in full effect, the Canadian Automobile Association and the Alberta Motor Association have partnered to launch a website to help educate all Albertans about the dangers of distracted driving.
The website uses a simulation engine to illustrate the potentially deadly consequences of taking your attention off the road. Users are put in the driver's seat as they select road conditions, speed and distractions. The simulation calculates the impact of the distraction in terms of the time and distance that a driver's attention is off the road, creating an infographic that brings the message home. An education section also provides statistics, tips and facts on distracted driving.
"There are no accidents when it comes to distracted driving, there are only collisions. A distraction can last only a moment, but the consequences last a lifetime," said Kurt Paterson, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, AMA Member Services. "With so many distractions behind the wheel, it's easy to become complacent. It's important that we all stay focused on the road.
International research shows that 20 to 30 per cent of all collisions involve driver distraction. The tragic impact of driver distraction demands a shift in responsibility behind the wheel.
"With distracted driving becoming more of an issue across Canada, CAA feels this website is important on a national level. It is an information source for driving schools, and all of us as motorists," said Jeff Walker, CAA Vice President of Public Affairs and Chief Strategy Officer.
A related iPhone application is under development and scheduled for release by late fall 2011.
