The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today concluded a successful trip to California to advocate the importance of Canada's energy supply to the United States, the Asia-Pacific region and the world. Kicking off the week at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Transportation and Energy Ministers' Conference, the Minister also met with influential U.S. think-tanks, business leaders, academics and government officials to examine issues of energy security and technology innovation.

"Over $1.6-billion worth of goods and services cross the Canada-U.S. border every day. Underpinning this prosperity is a two-way energy relationship that is unparalleled in size and scope," said Minister Oliver. "Thanks to the enormous scale of our energy resources and our democratic market economy, Canada is in the unique and enviable position of helping to ensure the energy security of our trading partners, such as the United States."

Wrapping up his week of meetings, Minister Oliver today attended events hosted by the RAND Corporation and Milken Institute think-tanks to discuss issues relating to the Canada-U.S. energy relationship. Discussions focused on the importance of Canada as a key supplier of oil, natural gas and electricity to California, energy security and the strategic benefits of the Keystone XL pipeline in providing long-term access to a secure oil supply, and creating opportunities for Canadian businesses. He also discussed how they could market their innovative smart grid and other clean energy technologies in California.

"Canada shares the United States' desire to see new pipeline projects proceed in an environmentally and socially responsible manner, we know that Keystone XL will also play a critical role in strengthening our economy, on both sides of the border," said Minister Oliver.

At today's events the Minister engaged in dialogue on shared interests and the challenges facing both countries' energy sectors in a changing global environment. He reinforced that a strong bilateral relationship is a priority of the Government and that Canada is a secure, stable supplier of energy to the U.S.
