Crown Princess of Norway to open the world's first osmotic power
plant
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - (Oslo, 7 October 2009) On Tuesday, 24 November, Her Royal HighnessCrown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway will be opening the world'sfirst osmotic power plant at Tofte, outside Oslo. The plant generatespower by exploiting the energy available when fresh water andseawater are mixed. Osmotic power is a renewable and emissions-freeenergy source that Statkraft has been researching into for 10 yearsand that will be capable of making a substantial global contributionto eco-friendly power production."In an era of major climate change and an increasing need for cleanenergy, we are proud to be presenting a renewable energy source whichhas never been harnessed until now. We are also most grateful thatthe Crown Princess wishes to lend her support to this milestone inour development of osmotic power", says Statkraft CEO, BårdMikkelsen. The prototype that will be opened at Tofte on 24 November has been indevelopment for more than a year. The plant will have a limitedproduction capacity and is intended primarily for testing anddevelopment purposes. The aim is to be capable of constructing acommercial osmotic power plant within a few years' time. The global potential of osmotic power is estimated to be 1,600-1,700TWh per annum, equivalent to 50 percent of the EU's total powerproduction. Osmotic power plants can, in principle, be locatedwherever fresh water runs into the sea; they produce no noise orpolluting emissions and they can be integrated into existingindustrial zones, for example, in the basements of industrialbuildings.Statkraft has been researching osmotic power since 1997 and hasdeveloped this prototype in cooperation with R&D organisations frommany countries. The project has attracted a lot of interest both inNorway and abroad and a number of foreign guests are expected toattend the opening.Statkraft is Europe's largest renewable energy company. The groupdevelops and generates hydropower, wind power, gas power and districtheating, and is a major player on the European power exchanges.Statkraft also develops marine energy, osmotic power, solar power andother innovative energy solutions. In 2008 Statkraft posted grossoperating revenues of EUR 3.1 billion. The group employs 3,200 staffin more than 20 countries. www.statkraft.comFor more information, please contact: * Jon Brandsar, Executive Vice President, phone + 47 24 06 78 92 / +47 905 18 576 * Aslak ÿverås, Communication Advisor, phone +47 24 06 75 88 / +47 900 86 020 * Torbjørn Steen, Vice President Communication, phone +47 24 06 72 28 / +47 911 66 888This announcement was originally distributed by Hugin.
