Industrial Wastewater Made Easy: A Simple Explanation

However, this perception could not be more wrong, because treating wastewater can be one of the most hazardous processes out there: both for your health and your company reputation. The reason for this is that effluent can contain some very damaging contaminants, with the potential to cause serious health problems for humans and wildlife, as well as catastrophes for the environment.

It’s for that reason that hiring a reputable industrial water treatment company is an absolute must. Treating effluent in the most effective way is both a method of ensuring that your organisation meets its regulatory requirements, but also to ensure that you are running sustainably and “green”.

There are plenty of reasons why this process is confusing for those not directly involved, and this is partially because it’s a subject that is rarely discussed, except by those working closely with effluent and its cleaning. We’ve highlighted below a simple explanation for how it works and what exactly it is that makes an industrial water treatment company and their work so important.

Step One

The first aspect of the treatment process is to remove the large particles from the effluent. This can be done in a few ways, most commonly through screening, filtering and settling the liquid so that the large particles are easy to separate from the rest of the water. It’s in this part of the process that you might encounter ‘sludge’ and other large particles – the removal of much of the solid material from the water begins the process and gets one step closer to clean water.

Removal of sludge comprises about half of the solid material, so it’s quite a large step to take all at once. The sludge is then treated separately.

Step Two

The next step that an industrial water treatment company would likely take is a more scientifically impressive one. The solid materials in the wastewater at this stage are too small to be removed with filters or screens, so bacteria is often brought in to start a process of digestion of the particulates.





What about the bacteria that has been introduced? Well, the final part of step two is to disinfect the water by introducing chlorine. This part of the process is much longer than step one, but it delivers H2O that is of a much cleaner standard.

Step Three

The final part in the process is one that isn’t always carried out, but when it is, it enables the water to be released freely back into the local reservoirs, lakes and other waterways. It’s a high-end cleaning that removes the final concerning parts of the effluent, like nitrogen. This is typically carried out if the liquid involved is to be returned to nature or somewhere where it might do damage if not entirely clean.

With so much on the line, both environmentally and from a reputation standpoint, it’s crucial that experts are called in to advise and then ultimately carry out any industrial water treatment. Company health is important, but the health of the planet even more so, which is why you’ll need to be sure that you’re using a team of real experts who are employing all the latest technologies.
