Expert Advice: Is Teeth Whitening for Me?

Who is not the right candidate for teeth whitening? NYC professionals give an overview of who should think twice about getting the popular treatment.

(firmenpresse) - Tooth discoloration is a natural process that almost all of us will experience over the years. The dulling of the “whiteness” of your smile can be caused if you drink coffee, tea or wine; have smoked a few cigarettes in your lifetime; or even if you’ve had a dental injury. However, this dulling of color is nothing to worry about and the yellowing of the enamel as we age is completely normal. That being said, if you're looking to refresh your smile and gain a bit of confidence back, professional teeth whitening (NYC coffee drinkers listen up) is a great solution.

This quick and easy procedure is effective for almost everybody, which is why it’s become so popular. If you’ve got a healthy mouth with no fillings or pre-existing issues, then you’re an ideal candidate for teeth whitening. However, there are a few cases where it might not be the best or most effective treatment. If you’re considering freshening up your smile, it’s always best to confirm with a dentist whether you’re the right candidate beforehand.

Who can’t have tooth whitening?

People with allergies and/or sensitivities

If you’re someone who is prone to sensitive teeth, you might not want to get this treatment. Recoloring can cause sensitivity to the tooth, which could be more severe if you experience this anyway. The same goes for people who have an allergy to peroxide since this is one of the active ingredients in the gel.

Children under 16 years old

While anyone younger than 16 years old shouldn’t be worrying about discoloration in the first place, due to the maturation of the tooth at this age, it’s not advised anyway. During early life, the tooth pulp (the center) is enlarged and using any whitening gel on the enamel could cause intense sensitivity.

Those with multiple restorations

In other words, if you have a lot of fillings, crowns or dental bonding, you’re not really the ideal candidate for this treatment. This is due to the fact that such “false” appendages on the teeth tend to resist coloration, which could result in uneven coloring - kind of defeating the point of whitening in the first place! If you plan on fixing discoloration and have some restorations coming up, it’s always best to get the whitening treatment beforehand so that any fillings or crowns can be matched to your new color.

Unhealthy gums

Any signs of sensitive or receding gums, decay or worn enamel could be reasons why you’re not a great candidate for this procedure. Whitening could cause unnecessary sensitivity or discomfit so your dentists will likely advise against it.

Pregnant or lactating women

Due to the materials used during teeth whitening, NYC professional dentists do not recommend that pregnant individuals undergo the treatment. However, if you still want to brighten up your pearly whites after you’ve given birth, it will be completely safe.

Like with any medical treatment, you should always do your research before undergoing something like teeth whitening. NYC has many reputable and experienced cosmetic dentists, so finding the right person for you shouldn’t be difficult. That way they’ll be able to answer any queries that you might have to make an informed decision.
