Colorful and organic: Ceresana study on the world market for biobased paints and coatings
Biobased paints and coatings are sold under different names: Natural paints, organic paints, building biology or eco paints, even vegan paints are available.

(firmenpresse) - Construction sites going green: the construction sector and other industries are increasingly working with sustainable materials, for example biobased insulation materials, biobased adhesives and bioplastics. Ceresana has now for the first time examined the global market for biobased paints and coatings made entirely or at least partly from renewable raw materials or minerals. The new market report forecasts that biobased paints for the interior and exterior of buildings, as well as wood and industrial coatings, will achieve global sales of around USD 19.6 billion by 2032.
Budding growth for biobased paints
Biobased paints and coatings promise to be less toxic and more environmentally friendly than petrochemical products based purely on petroleum or natural gas. The market for biobased paints and coatings is still at the dawn of its development and accounts for only a small portion of the total paint and coatings market so far. Over the next 10 years, however, the volume will increase significantly: Ceresana expects annual growth of over 5.1% in Asia, 3.9% in Europe and 3.3% in North America. However, there are still many challenges to overcome for a real breakthrough: prices and properties of organic products cannot yet keep up with fossil competitors in all applications. So far, it has also not yet been clarified what exactly "organic" should mean for paints and coatings. Ideally, the natural raw materials should come from sustainable agriculture, forestry or fisheries and remain as unchanged as possible.
Non-toxic, environmentally friendly and beneficial
Minerals and renewable raw materials not only offer greater independence from crude oil and natural gas: although biobased paints and coatings are often more expensive than fossil products, they can in some cases offer better quality and cost-effectiveness, for instance advantages such as higher color fastness, abrasion resistance, viscosity or color coverage. Natural pigments offer a very broad color spectrum. Natural paints that don't have a diffusion barrier prevent condensation and mold: they allow moisture in the air to pass through, can store it and release it again. One of the main arguments in favor of "green" coatings is their harmlessness to health and the environment: the long-term effects of solvents, plasticizers, nanoparticles and other potentially toxic paint substances often still have to be researched, especially the combined use of combinations of different substances. In contrast, many natural materials have been known and tested for centuries. The "full declaration" of all ingredients not only helps people suffering from allergies and chemical intolerances. Biodegradable paint residues can simply be disposed of on the compost pile.
