Kettering, Ohio - November 4m 2023 - Tama Martial Arts, a leading martial arts studio located at 1753 Woodman Dr., Kettering Ohio proudly hosted its highly anticipated Kids Karate Tournament, showcasing the remarkable talents of young martial artists from approximately 10 participating schools. The event, held today, was a testament to the dedication, skill, and perseverance of these young competitors.
In an inspiring display of talent and determination, three exceptional Black Belt competitors were honored with scholarship funds generously provided by Grandmaster Manuel Taningco, a respected figure in the martial arts community. These scholarships are aimed at encouraging and empowering youth to excel academically and pursue their dreams in higher education.
Peyton Carathers, a senior at West Holmes High School hailing from Loudonville, Ohio, demonstrated exceptional prowess by clinching First Place in Kumite (sparring) and First Place in Kata (Forms). Guided by her martial arts coaches, Christine and Jim Fisher of Rising Star Martial Arts, Peyton's dedication to her craft and her academic excellence have earned her a scholarship. She plans to study psychology with a minor in criminal justice, aspiring to make a positive impact on society.
Ty Wetzel, a junior at Walter E. Stebbins High School in Dayton, exhibited his expertise by securing First Place in weapons forms, First Place in Kata, and First Place in Kumite (Sparring). Ty, a member of Tama's Black Belt Team, started his martial arts journey at Tama Martial Arts at the age of 8. Today, he not only excels in his own training but also dedicates himself to helping other kids build their confidence. Ty plans to pursue a degree in Business in college, with the goal of enhancing his teaching abilities and management skills at the studio.
Lindsang Nguyen, a senior from Beavercreek High School, showcased her talent by winning First Place in weapons kata and Second Place in sparring and Kata. Lindsang, who began her martial arts training at Tama at the age of 6, is also one of Tama's esteemed Black Belt instructors, inspiring other young martial artists to achieve their best. She boasts an impressive 3.9 GPA and plans to pursue Mechanical Engineering in college, driven by her passion for innovation and problem-solving.




Grandmaster Manuel Taningco, the driving force behind this scholarship karate tournament, established the initiative to encourage youths under 18 to excel in both their martial arts training and academics. Inspired by his own journey, having received a college scholarship to New Mexico State University, Grandmaster Taningco aims to provide similar opportunities to the next generation. Celebrating his 48th year teaching martial arts in the Dayton area, he has been promoting martial arts events since 1976, shaping the lives of countless individuals through his teachings.
The overwhelming positive response from parents and students who participated in the event today speaks volumes about the impact of the Kids Karate Tournament. Looking ahead, Tama Martial Arts is excited to announce two karate events in the year 2024, continuing the tradition of fostering talent, discipline, and community spirit.
