Transmode announces iWDM-PON based multi-service access network strategy
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Stockholm, Sweden, WDM-PON Forum, Orlando, Florida and Broadband World Forum,
Paris France - 27(th) September 2011 - Transmode, a global supplier of packet
optical networking solutions, today announced the company's strategy for multi-
service access networks built on its iWDM-PON architecture.
WDM-PON is rapidly emerging as a leading contender in the race for high-speed
optical access because WDM-PON offers unmatched symmetrical capacity and greater
reach than the various TDM-based PON options. Network operators worldwide are
starting to consider the various WDM-PON architectures available in the market.
Against this backdrop, Transmode is announcing its iWDM-PON strategy to address
this extension of WDM networking deeper into access networks. Transmode's iWDM-
PON strategy is based on its existing widely deployed TM-Series and TG-Series
Active and Passive WDM platforms. Using ITU-standard C-Band DWDM, these
platforms extend existing WDM metro networks into FTTx applications for high
capacity access networks primarily in Enterprise and Backhaul applications.
Sten Nordell, Transmode's CTO commented, "Flexibility will be key in tomorrow's
Gigabit-society where high-speed fiber-based access will be required to match
the ever-growing capacity demands of both residential and business customers
over fixed and mobile networks. Fiber infrastructure must be capitalized on to
achieve a highly flexible network where variable bandwidth is achievable to any
location regardless of customer type or application.
"Network operators should now be considering the available options and
considering those that will give them the simplicity, capacity and flexibility
to serve all their customers over a single common access infrastructure. Stacked
access networks for dedicated applications or less open options will not achieve
the right levels of scalability and, above all, will not address the key issues
of manageability, investment protection and cost."
Transmode's TG-Series currently provides network operators with a ruggedized
Passive WDM infrastructure that extends capacity within access networks.
Transmode is extending this capability with a range of current and future active
WDM components from the TM-Series to create the iWDM-PON architecture.
Using standard C-band DWDM from the TG-Series in the access network, Transmode's
iWDM-PON architecture enables the use of existing pluggable optics in Transmode
or third-party equipment to provide a broad range of high-capacity services. By
using the Native Packet Optical approach all services are transported
transparently without lock-in to any technology or vendor-specific hardware.
Applications include Fiber-to-the-Building or Curb for high-speed broadband
services, Fiber-to-the-Basestation for mobile backhaul and direct fiber access
for Enterprise services.
Transmode is now extending the current range of DWDM SFP and XFP based optics
options with the introduction of a low-cost injection-locked self-tuning SFP
with the required central-office seeding light source and also a low-cost fixed
wavelength 1 Gbit/s DWDM SFP. Together these new options significantly reduce
the cost of WDM optics in access devices and greatly simplify network
deployments, removing all need for WDM knowledge when deploying access devices.
Furthermore, the use of the C-Band within the iWDM-PON solution keeps the access
and metro networks on the same standard wavelength grid. This enables
wavelengths to go all-optical to any location in the access, metro or core
networks because it avoids the need for wavelength conversion as traffic moves
from one network to the other. Another benefit of this architecture is that
capacity can be upgraded on a per-customer basis, without affecting other
customers on the network.
Jon Baldry, Technical Marketing Manager at Transmode and Board Member of the
WDM-PON Forum, added, "By bringing these new components to the TM-Series,
Transmode is enabling customers to build flexible multi-service WDM-PON access
networks, where the same common standards-based infrastructure can support the
widest possible range of applications with services from 100 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s
and beyond. By keeping the access network as standard DWDM, Transmode's iWDM-PON
approach will take advantage of constant cost reduction and high volume of DWDM
deployments to continue to drive costs down. It ultimately enables iWDM-PON to
become a viable option for Gigabit services in future Fiber-to-the-Home
applications."
Customer trials of the new self-tuning iWDM-PON options are scheduled to
commence at the start of 2012 with network deployments planned from the middle
of 2012.
On Tuesday 27(th) September Magnus Olson, Director of Hardware Engineering at
Transmode will be speaking at the WDM-PON Forum in Orlando, Florida and Sten
Nordell, Transmode's CTO will be speaking at the Broadband World Forum in Paris,
France. Both will be discussing flexible and standards based multi-service
access network infrastructures based on Transmode's iWDM-PON architecture.
About Transmode
Transmode is a global provider of packet-optical networking solutions that
enable fixed line and mobile network operators to cost effectively address the
capacity needs created by the rapid growth in video and data traffic. These
solutions are important building blocks in next-generation high-speed optical
networks that support services such as broadband backhaul, mobile data backhaul,
video delivery services and cloud computing. Transmode's solutions are based
onWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and packet optical transport
technologies, which are designed to increase the capacity, flexibility and
functionality of optical metro core and metro access networks. Transmode's
Intelligent WDM (iWDM(TM)) approach gives key advantages to customers, such as
ultra-low latency, low power consumption and innovative network design.
Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden and listed on the NASDAQ OMX Stockholm
Exchange (TRMO) the company's global organization of local teams and value-added
resellers cover all major global markets. Since 2000 the company has installed
more than 20,000 systems for over 300 fixed and mobile network operators,
service providers, large enterprises and public institutions in over 40
