Staff at Canada's Largest Union in Legal Strike Position October 10

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/27/11 -- Members of the Canadian Staff Union (CSU) - who work for Canada's largest union, CUPE - will be in a legal strike position at 12:01 am on October 10.
CSU President Peter Paulekat says, "The Ontario Minister of Labour has now issued a 'No Board' report, confirming that the two sides have been unable to reach a negotiated settlement. This starts the clock ticking toward a possible work stoppage by the 405Servicing and Specialist Reps in every province except Quebec, as well as administrative and technical staff at the union's head office in Ottawa.
The CUPE employees have been without a contract since December 31, 2009.
Says Paulekat, "The major stumbling block in this round of bargainingis the employer's position that staff must assume joint liability for the CUPE Employees Pension Plan. This is completely inconsistent with the position we take with CUPE employers when we are bargaining on behalf of CUPE members across the country.
"This employer is also refusing to accommodate employees with disabilities and work reintegration requirements after absences due to illness, and also refusing to extend LTD coverage to all temporary employees," he says.
Two more days of contract talks have been scheduled for this week, September 27 and 28, in the hopes of averting a strike.
