World Rabies Day: Vaccinate to Protect Against Rabies

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/28/11 -- Today is World Rabies Day and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is encouraging pet and livestock owners to keep their communities healthy by having their animals vaccinated against rabies.
Globally, approximately 55 000 people die from rabies each year. Although rabies-related deaths in Canada are uncommon, the disease is still very serious.
"Animal owners, veterinarians and governments all have a role to play in keeping our animals and our communities healthy" says Dr. Brian Evans, Chief Veterinary Officer of Canada. "World Rabies Day is a strong reminder of the global impact this disease has on wildlife, domestic animals and humans."
Keep rabies out of your community by doing the following.
Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of warm-blooded animals. Bats, skunks, foxes, and raccoons are the most common transmitters of the disease in Canada. All mammals, including humans, are susceptible to getting infected by the disease.
Rabies is a "federally reportable disease" in Canada. This means that a person must inform the CFIA if they have (or know about) an animal that is suspected of having rabies or having been exposed to rabies.
