Edmonton Economic Development Corporation: The Silver Screen: Edmonton's Got It All

(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/28/11 -- The film community knows Edmonton well. For starters, movie stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Rob Lowe, Dane Cook and Carmen Electra have filmed here over the years. Brad Pitt was here too. Several scenes of his film The Assassination of Jesse James were filmed in Fort Edmonton Park, located in the city's sprawling river valley. Incidentally, recently opened its , featuring daily shows of Northern Light, a historical film about Edmonton, which delivers an amazing "4D" experience, including snow falling from the ceiling!
But there's something else that's put Edmonton on the film industry's radar: the (EIFF). This year, EIFF promises a particularly great run. Cinemaniacs can take their pick: anything from gripping documentaries (like the gorgeously-shot Wild Horse Wild Ride) to provocative international works (like Iranian election expose The Green Wave) to one of the most talked-about films at this year's , The Skin I Live, directed by Pedro Almodovar and starring Antonio Banderas.
The festival's opening night film is worth raving about too. From controversial director Thom Fitzgerald comes Opening Night, starring Academy Award™ Winner Olympia Dukakis. In it, Stella (Dukakis) breaks her longtime partner Dot (played by another Academy Award™ Winner Brenda Fricker) out of a retirement home where she's been admitted against her will. The action that ensues has been described as "a wild and wooly road trip to Canada". EIFF festival programmer Guy Lavallee calls the film "funny, raunchy, and incredibly moving."
Kerrie Long, EIFF festival producer, adds that this "bold" film is a fitting opener for a festival lineup that is "filled with some of 2011's boldest new independent films."
Edmonton has long been a supporter of indie cinema. The Princess Theatre in historic is a great example. Constructed from 1914 to 1915, it contained what was then considered the largest stage in western Canada. On that stage, the Princess Theatre hosted musical vaudeville and concerts, as well as "moving pictures".
"We are so lucky to have the arthouses like and Metro Cinema at the ," says Long. "Year-round they are programming non-Hollywood films." In other words, if you want to see something a little bit indie during any time of year when EIFF isn't happening, you know where to go!
