Minister Oliver: Natural Gas Holds a Prominent Place in Canada's Energy and Economic Future

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/28/11 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, speaking to the Economic Club of Canada in Ottawa today, emphasized the important role that natural gas plays in Canada's energy and economic futures. Minister Oliver highlighted his recent trips across Canada and the U.S., where his message has been clear: Canada is a global energy superpower that can supply energy to its customers in a way that is safe, reliable and environmentally responsible.
"On the world stage, Canada is increasingly being recognized for the strength and dynamism of our economy," said Minister Oliver. "A major part of Canada's advantage is its resource sector, of which the energy sector accounts for nearly seven percent of our GDP."
Minister Oliver noted that the energy sector in Canada goes far beyond just oil, and that natural gas also has a prominent role to play. Canada is the world's third-largest producer of natural gas, and more than half of all Canadian homes are heated by natural gas. It is a cleaner form of energy, with 30 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than oil and 45 percent fewer than coal.
Minister Oliver also acknowledged the ongoing collaboration between Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian Gas Association. Over the past 10 years, natural gas utilities in Canada have invested more than $450 million in conservation and energy efficiency. It is estimated that during that same period the industry's efforts reduced the production of GHG emissions by more than 16 million tonnes.
"We recognize that natural gas can and must be a key ingredient in Canada's energy mix for many years into the future," he added. "This industry will continue to be a central partner in maintaining and enhancing Canada's status as a global energy superpower."
