Mobile Market Becoming Most Important Growth Driver for Chipmakers
The Bedford Report Provides Equity Research on Advanced Micro Devices & Marvell Technology

(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 09/29/11 -- Shares of companies focused on the manufacturing of chips used in various products including PCs and smartphones have fallen dramatically in recent months as weakened consumer confidence has affected chip demand. The Bedford Report examines the outlook for companies in the Semiconductor Industry and provides equity research on Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE: AMD) and Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: MRVL). Access to the full company reports can be found at:
Research Company Gartner Inc. said that semiconductor sales worldwide will decline 0.1 percent this year to $299 billion, reversing a previous forecast that revenue would rise 5.1 percent. The research company said on Sept. 8 that global personal-computer shipments will increase less than predicted this year and next as consumers scale back spending. Semiconductor companies' third-quarter forecasts have been "well below seasonal averages," reports Bryan Lewis, research vice president at Stamford, Connecticut-based Gartner.
One positive development is the growing sales of smartphones and tablets, especially Apple's iPad. That has helped make NAND flash memory and data processing ASICs the fastest-growing areas in 2011, with about a 20% growth, according to Gartner.

Marvell Technologies announced an impressive 13 percent sequential revenue jump in its storage end market in the second quarter. The company mainly attributed the boost to share gains at Hitachi Mobile Drive, which is now in demand, as well as strong seasonal demand. Marvell also posted a staggering 18 percent sequential improvement in its mobile and wireless end market.
Advanced Micro Devices forecasts sequential third quarter revenue growth between eight and twelve percent. Recently AMD named Rory P. Read, an executive from PC maker Lenovo Group, as its new CEO.
