(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/29/11 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, spoke today to the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association in Calgary. In his address, Minister Oliver highlighted the crucial contribution of the pipeline industry to Canada's energy security and underlined the importance of this industry to the Canadian economy.

"Pipelines play a key role in delivering energy to heat our homes, power our cars, maintain our way of life, and grow our economy," said Minister Oliver. "The bottom line is that Canadians want and need energy, and pipelines allow that need to be met in a safe and reliable manner."

The Minister emphasized the pipeline industry's vital contribution to the Canadian economy. Ongoing investment in a safe and reliable pipeline industry and infrastructure is stimulating direct and indirect jobs across the country, fostering innovation and positioning Canada as a global energy leader.

"Every year, the pipeline industry transports oil and natural gas that pump about $60 billion into Canada's economy," said Minister Oliver. "Expanding our energy markets in North America and beyond, including opening new markets for the oil sands, will greatly contribute to our economic future for generations to come."

The Minister took the opportunity to highlight the Government's strong support for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, noting that "our Government strongly supports this project because it has the potential to play a critical role in strengthening our North American economy and will be an important plank in building continental energy security."

Minister Oliver also reiterated the importance of safety and regulation to meet economic objectives in a safe and sustainable manner.

"Our Government will continue to support efforts to ensure the Canadian pipeline industry maintains the highest standards of safety," said the Minister. "It is clear to me this industry understands that a good track record in safety and environmental performance helps to create a distinct competitive advantage. We have to remain fully committed to safety so that we can make sure we continue to develop our energy resources in a manner that is socially and environmentally responsible."
