Participation in the LOUISE project highlights commitment to cost-efficient CO? capture and a sustainable energy future

(PresseBox) - On 20 November, Doosan Lentjes participated in an international webinar as part of the transnational research project LOUISE (Low-Cost CO? Capture by Chemical Looping Combustion of Waste-Derived Fuels). The event focused on modern technologies for decarbonizing the energy sector and brought together experts from industry, academia, and research institutions to discuss innovative approaches and solutions for a clean and sustainable energy future.

The webinar began with an operator’s perspective on decarbonization presented by the energy company Fortum, followed by an overview of the project’s scope and goals from the Technical University of Darmstadt. Key topics included discussions on alternative waste-derived fuels and pilot trials with Oxyfuel and Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) technologies. Special attention was given to corrosion studies in thermal waste treatment plants and CLC systems, highlighting critical material-related challenges.

A highlight of the “Upscaling Session” was the presentation by Dr. Sebastian Schmitt, a researcher in the R&D department at Doosan Lentjes, who showcased the design of a CLC demonstration plant and emphasized the importance of transitioning from pilot projects to large-scale applications. Additionally, simulation results for co-combustion in circulating fluidized bed systems were presented, underscoring the scalability of these innovative technologies.

Further sessions explored the techno-economic and environmental impacts of Waste-to-Energy and CLC technologies.

Of particular note was a groundbreaking 3 MWth CLC demonstration project in China, paving the way for future large-scale applications.

LOUISE: An Innovative Research Project for Cost-Efficient CO? Capture

The LOUISE research project aims to reduce CO? capture costs by leveraging Chemical Looping Combustion in combination with energy generation from waste. This process integrates energy production with inherent CO? separation, making a significant contribution to the energy transition.

Doosan Lentjes plays a key role in the LOUISE project, particularly through the development of a 3D simulation model for the Chemical Looping reactor system. This model not only reflects experimental results but also supports the design and simulation of large-scale plants, including reactors and flue gas treatment systems. Furthermore, Doosan Lentjes is responsible for designing a 10 MWth demonstration plant.

As part of the project, Doosan Lentjes collaborates closely with international partners and renowned research institutions. These partnerships foster the exchange of knowledge and technologies, enabling continuous improvements in the technical and economic feasibility of carbon capture technologies.

A Shared Goal: Decarbonization

“Our participation in the LOUISE webinar underscores our commitment to advancing innovative technologies like Chemical Looping and making a substantial contribution to CO? emissions reduction,” says Sebastian Schmitt. “Our goal is to bring these technologies from research to large-scale application and actively shape the energy transition.”

Doosan Lentjes is headquartered in Ratingen, North Rhine-Westphalia, and is part of the Korean Doosan Group.
