Ceresana has analyzed the global market for mineral, synthetic, and natural insulation materials used in the construction industry for the fifth time.

(firmenpresse) - Saving crude oil by using rigid foam panels made from crude oil? Styrofoam, Airpop, and co. actually save more energy than what was used to produce them. “Demand for PUR, PIR, and EPS insulation materials is currently growing in particular,” reports Oliver Kutsch, Managing Director of Ceresana: “Sales of insulation products such as panels or spray foam are recovering again, albeit with significant regional differences.” The market research institute predicts that the consumption of building materials for thermal insulation, cold insulation, and soundproofing, as well as fire protection, will grow to over 647 million cubic meters worldwide by 2033.

Keeping Warm with Wool and Foam Insulation

Renewable insulation materials made from cork, hemp, cellulose flakes, or other organic raw materials are becoming increasingly popular. Ceresana has already published a study on the market situation regarding bio-insulation. Overall, however, bio-based insulation materials have only captured a small share of the overall market so far. The analysis of demand for insulation types shows: Mineral wool is currently the most widely used insulation material, accounting for more than half of global demand. This includes insulating materials made of glass wool or rock wool, which are manufactured from sand, stone, lime, and various minerals. As the market study shows, these are followed by foamed plastics: expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS), polyurethane (PUR), and polyisocyanurate (PIR). The established synthetic insulation materials comply with conventional building regulations; they are lightweight, durable, weather-resistant, and, to date, comparatively inexpensive. In the event of fire, natural insulating materials can be more advantageous because they burn less quickly and with less smoke than rigid foams, which have to be treated with flame retardants.

Tax Money for Energy-Efficient Refurbishment

In a detached house built in the 1980s, insulating the façade and roof alone can reduce energy consumption by more than a third, not to mention insulating the story and basement ceilings. Many countries therefore have state subsidy programs for the energy-efficient refurbishment of buildings. In the European Union, plans for a general renovation obligation have been abandoned. Nevertheless, there are good prospects for insulation manufacturers: The EU member states have agreed to reduce energy consumption in the residential building sector by 20% by 2035 compared to 2020 and to renovate a quarter of the least energy-efficient non-residential buildings. While new residential construction has virtually collapsed in many regions of the world, the construction industry is benefiting from new logistics facilities, warehouses, and data centers. After the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, new hotel and restaurant buildings are also in demand again.

New Edition of the Ceresana Market Study “Insulation Materials – World”:

Chapter 1 provides a complete description and analysis of the global insulation material market – including forecasts up to 2033. For each region of the world, this chapter shows production in cubic meters and demand in cubic meters and tonnes as well as the revenues generated with insulation materials in US dollars and euros.
Chapter 2 presents the production, demand, import, export, and sales of insulation materials for 16 countries that are particularly relevant for the insulation materials market. Demand is broken down for the five most important insulation types both in millions of cubic meters and in 1,000 tonnes: EPS (expandable polystyrene), XPS (extruded polystyrene), PUR/PIR (polyurethane/polyisocyanurate), Glass wool, Stone wool. These construction segments are differentiated: Residential construction, Commercial construction, New construction, Renovation.
Chapter 3 presents company profiles of the most important insulation material manufacturers – clearly arranged according to contact details, revenues, net income, product range, production sites, profile summary, as well as product types and application areas. In-depth profiles of the 69 most important producers are given, for example of BASF SE, Compagnie de Saint-Gobain S.A., DuPont de Nemours, Inc., Fletcher Building Ltd., Holcim Ltd., Kingspan Group plc, Owens Corning, Rockwool International A/S, and Standard Industries Inc.
