How it works with uranium

(PresseBox) - People are concerned about uranium. Energy should be clean and always available, and nuclear power can do that.

It is a long way from the mining of uranium ore to the disposal of nuclear waste. Uranium is extracted from the uranium ore, refined and finally made into a fuel element. The fuel remains in the reactor for around three years, followed by interim storage, reprocessing and recycling. The waste can then be disposed of. Uranium mining initially involves open-pit mining, underground mining or dissolution and extraction via boreholes (in-situ recovery, ISR). ISR is usually used, or the uranium is leached in a mill. After U3O8 has been refined to uranium dioxide, it is enriched. Most nuclear power plants require fuel with 3.5 to 5 percent U-235, i.e. low enriched uranium. Many modern and small modular reactors, on the other hand, require higher enrichments, so-called HALEU, i.e. uranium enriched to around 20 percent. The enriched uranium is converted into a powder from which the nuclear fuel elements are then produced.

Around two thirds of global uranium production come from Kazakhstan, Canada and Australia. Uranium is traded on the spot market, but mainly via medium to long-term contracts (futures market). Unlike gold, for example, there is no exchange for uranium. Energy suppliers buy uranium, and investors also acquire physical uranium stocks. International controls are intended to ensure that enrichment plants are not used to produce uranium suitable for nuclear weapons. As the growing global hunger for energy can only be met with the help of nuclear power, new nuclear power plants are being built. And so, uranium could become scarce.

Uranium is available from Premier American Uranium - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/premier-american-uranium-inc/ - in excellent uranium regions such as Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico.

IsoEnergy - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/isoenergy-ltd/ - owns high-grade uranium deposits in Saskatchewan, Australia, Argentina and the U.S., as well as a portfolio of permitted uranium and vanadium mines in Utah.
