Growth vs. Fixed Mindset: Which Is Better? Mental Health Professionals Weigh In

Growth vs. Fixed Mindset: Which Is Better? Mental Health Professionals Weigh In

ID: 725770

Do you have a growth mindset that has you facing challenges head-on? Or a fixed mindset that limits your potential? Let’s take a look at ways you can determine how you think.

(firmenpresse) - What is your gut reaction when you come up against one of life’s many hurdles? Are you the type to power through the obstacles that bar your way to success? Or would you rather try and find an easier way around? How you answer this question is indicative of the kind of mindset that you have. But what mindsets are out there, and how do they influence the way you go about life?
The Growth and Fixed PerspectivesFirst, let’s take a look at the origins of this school of thought. It’s based on a hypothesis developed by leading psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck, which posits that there are two prevailing mindsets that play a key role in motivation and self-regulation: the growth mindset and the fixed mindset. The growth mindset is characterized by the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work; in contrast, the fixed mindset instead believes that an individual’s capabilities are unchangeable.
Challenges and Limiting BeliefsAs you can imagine, individuals inclined towards growth are more likely to embrace challenges, persevere through failure, and view learning as a continuous positive experience - studies have found that those with this mindset often perform better academically and are more successful in their careers, relationships, and other aspects of life.
By contrast, those with a fixed perspective may believe that they lack the natural ability to overcome challenges, leading them to give up when faced with obstacles; as a result, their abilities may plateau prematurely, and they may never realize their full potential.
Naturally, you’d probably rather have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset. But how can you tell which one you have? Well, many educational institutions or mental health providers offer online screening tools that can help you determine how you think. These tools mostly take the form of short quizzes that can be completed in a few minutes.
Mindsets Are Not StaticSo, you’ve taken a quiz, and you’ve found that you have a fixed mindset. Characteristic of your thinking patterns, you may consider it the end of the world. Luckily, it’s not! Mindsets can actually be adjusted if you’re aware of them, and this is most easily done with coaches or licensed mental health providers like Mission Connection.

If you’d like to develop growth-oriented thinking patterns, consider going to a provider that offers specialized, evidence-based modalities, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) - these are designed to address the root causes of behaviors, including any that have you rolling over in defeat at the thought of challenges.
Of course, those aren’t the only treatments that work - there are many other options out there. When in doubt, ask a mental health expert to see what your best course of action is!
