Dental Implant Success Criteria & Long-Term Care Tips From Mesa, AZ Dentists
Surveys show an upswing in the number of dental implants being installed, but the number of hygienists and patients with solid information on care isn't keeping pace. Experts say that care and preventative maintenance are the key factor in long-term implant success.
(firmenpresse) - Recently published reports show the number of dental implants being installed is rising, due to the simultaneous aging of the baby boomer generation and advances in technology.
But education isn't keeping pace, putting both the implants and those who receive them at risk. Expert information and care are critical to the health of the patient, according to the dental experts at Mesa-based Snow Family Dentistry.
The practice explains that individuals are typically good candidates for dental implants if they are in good health and do not smoke. Candidates must have adequate jawbone density or be open to receiving a bone graft. They are more expensive than bridges, but have the opportunity to last longer and preserve jaw health, which is why proper care is critical.
Education GapsThe implant market value hit $4.43 billion in 2023. That number is expected to rise to $5.89 billion by 2029, according to Registered Dental Hygienist Magazine. But more than 90 percent of dental hygienists surveyed said they lacked knowledge about caring for implants.
These numbers are cause for alarm, since hygienists are key in detecting peri-implantitis, or inflammation and bone loss around a dental implant. Between 10 and 20 percent of implants show signs of peri-implantitis after 15 years, according to RDH Magazine. Left untreated, this often leads to implant failure.
A Problem of OutsourcingPart of the issue seems to be familiarity. More than half of the registered dental hygienists surveyed said their practices only restored implants, but referred patients to specialized providers for surgery to place the implant. This means hygienists often have little exposure to the product they are responsible for monitoring.
With proper care, implants can last 25 years or more. But 40 percent of hygienists see fewer than 25 implants per year, so they may lack the exposure or time to help patients meet this ideal. Choosing a dental office that manages the entire implant process can be key to implant longevity.
One-Stop CareWhen considering which dental practice to choose, it's wise to look for one that handles all aspects of care in-house, according to Snow Family Dentistry. There's a better chance the staff will be familiar with all aspects of an individual's care, which often translates to better long-term outcomes, according to a representative from the Mesa, Arizona, dental practice.
Searching for "dental implants," or oral surgeons located in a specific geographic area is a good way to find a practice that handles both implants and ongoing care.
