New Analysis Highlights Climate Impact of Global Food Waste
A newly released analysis highlights how global food waste contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and resource loss. The findings are drawing renewed attention to food system sustainability and the role waste reduction could play in climate mitigation efforts.
(firmenpresse) - A newly released environmental analysis is drawing attention to the growing climate impact of global food waste, with researchers highlighting the scale of emissions linked to food that is produced but never consumed.
The analysis, published by sustainability platform Ever Wonder Adventure, reviews widely cited international research examining the environmental effects of food waste across global food systems.
According to the findings, nearly one?third of food produced for human consumption worldwide is lost or wasted each year. Environmental researchers estimate that discarded food contributes between 8 percent and 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Food waste generates emissions primarily when organic material decomposes in landfills, releasing methane, a greenhouse gas significantly more potent than carbon dioxide in trapping heat in the atmosphere.
Analysts note that if global food waste were treated as a country, it would rank among the largest greenhouse gas emitters worldwide.
The report also examines the broader environmental footprint of global food production. Studies referenced in the analysis estimate that food systems account for roughly 26 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions through agricultural production, land use change, livestock farming, processing, transportation, and distribution.
Researchers note that a notable portion of these emissions is associated with food that never reaches consumers. Globally, more than 1.3 billion tonnes of edible food are discarded annually despite the significant resources required for its production.
“Reducing food waste represents one of the most immediate opportunities to improve the efficiency and sustainability of global food systems,” a spokesperson for Ever Wonder Adventure said. “Greater awareness of the scale of food loss can help support broader efforts to reduce environmental pressures associated with food production.”
The analysis also highlights the connection between food waste and global food security. While large quantities of edible food are discarded each year, millions of people worldwide continue to face food insecurity and malnutrition.
Experts increasingly note that improving supply chain efficiency, food storage infrastructure, and consumer awareness could play an important role in reducing waste across the food system.
