New Engineering Jobs Increase Five Times Above General Staffing Trends, as Reed Engineering Job Index Rises to 166

ID: 74128

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 10/10/11 -- Demand for new engineers has risen five times faster year on year than demand for average staff, according to the latest figures which show the latest Reed Engineering Jobs Index has reached 166.

Demand for engineers is 88 per cent higher now than it was last September, when the Reed Engineering Job Index had fallen back to 84. While demand across other staffing sectors has also risen- most notably for in construction- the year on year increase for the general Reed Job Index is a much lower 16 per cent.

The Reed Engineering Job Index rose by one point (one per cent) in September compared to August, to reach 166. In contrast, nationwide staff demand declined, as the Reed Job Index fell one point month on month to 121. The Engineering Index also shows that demand for new Engineers is 66 per cent higher than it was when the Index level was set at 100 back in December 2009.

Each month the Reed Job Index tracks the number of new job opportunities and the salaries on offer compared to the previous month and against a baseline of 100 set in December 2009. The Reed Job Index is based on data compiled by the UK's largest recruitment site, reed.co.uk, which every day carries over 100,000 job opportunities from 9,000 recruiters across 37 career sectors across the UK.

The latest figures show that salaries on offer for new engineers remain muted, however- especially for where salaries remain stagnant. The Reed Engineering Salary Index stayed level at 93 in September, which means that salaries are seven percent lower than they were in December 2009 when the Index began. However this is in line with general trends, where salaries have lagged behind inflation across the board.

Martin Warnes, Managing Director of , comments on the Reed Engineering Job Index for September:

"It is really striking to see that demand for engineers has reached such a high level, and has continued to rise in September in contrast to falling job demand elsewhere across the economy.

"This might indicate a much-sought rebalancing of the UK economy, towards production. Employer confidence has risen high enough to make this investment in new recruitment, which is a leading indicator of future engineering growth."
