Paul Johnson Promoted to Lead SmithGroup's Building Technology Studio
(firmenpresse) - DETROIT, MI -- (Marketwire) -- 10/11/11 -- SmithGroup (), one of the nation's leading architecture, engineering, interiors, and planning firms, announced that Paul Johnson, FAIA, has been promoted to lead the firm's Building Technology Studio in Detroit, Mich.
He replaces the retiring Tom O'Connor, FAIA, FASTM, LEED AP, who served in the role since 2002.
Johnson joined SmithGroup in 1986 and has over 40 years of experience in the architecture and engineering industry. In his new role, he is responsible for all aspects of the building technology studio's performance consistent with SmithGroup's vision, mission and core values. Johnson will lead the development of the team, ensuring that talent and resources align to achieve clients' objectives, and that the design, technical, and financial performance goals of the studio are met. He will also provide mentorship to staff while identifying opportunities that will enable the building technology studio to enhance its range of service offerings.
In his tenure with the firm, Johnson has been instrumental in delivering innovative building systems solutions to a range of clients, specializing in projects requiring assessments and exterior enclosure systems; in-situ evaluations; and testing, failure analysis and corrective concept development and implementation efforts. He has served as a building envelope consultant on notable projects including facade replacement of the 390,000-square foot General Services Administration Des Moines Federal Building in Des Moines, Iowa. Johnson also played a lead role in several renovation projects for the Detroit Institute of Arts in Detroit, Mich.; the curtain wall recladding of the 26-story Tower Plaza Condominiums in Ann Arbor, Mich.; and investigation of the innovative mile-long stainless steel roof system at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport McNamara Terminal in Romulus, Mich. Other notable clients include Smithsonian Institution, the University of Michigan, and General Motors Corporation.
Johnson regularly contributes to technical journals, presents at industry conferences, and participates in the development of construction standards through ASTM committees. In 2007, he was inducted into the American Institute of Architects' College of Fellows, one of the most coveted honors in the architecture practice.
Johnson holds a bachelors of science degree in architecture from Lawrence Technological University and is a registered architect in Michigan, New York and Iowa. He is a resident of Livonia, Mich.
