Minister Clement Engages with U.S. Business Community on Balancing the Budget
(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/12/11 -- Today, the Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for FedNor, delivered a speech at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington D.C. regarding the Government of Canada's commitment to eliminate the deficit and return to a balanced budget by 2014-15.
"We want to ensure that we can continue to invest in the priorities of Canadians while keeping taxes low so our economy can continue to grow and create jobs," said Minister Clement. "The review of government program spending is an opportunity to modernize government, help us become more efficient and find savings."
The Minister outlined to the audience, which included members of the Canada-U.S. Business Council, the Government of Canada's objective to achieve ongoing annual savings of at least $4 billion by 2014-15. He communicated that government organizations are undertaking a review to see that Canada remains on the right track to fiscal recovery, without cutting transfer payments to individuals or to the provinces.
"While Canada's economy is sound, risks to the global economy remain serious," said Minister Clement. "That's why Canada is committed to responsible government spending to ensure ongoing value for Canadian taxpayers."
Results from the government spending review will be released as part of Budget 2012.
