2011 Mid-Atlantic Bio Symposium Brings Together Region's Bioscience Community

Half Day Event Focuses on the Intersection of Science, Policy, Business and Finance


(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 10/12/11 -- Today the Mid-Atlantic Bio Symposium brought together industry leaders, senior government officials and representatives from biotech and device companies from around the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area for a half-day of programming focused on science, policy, business and finance.

The event, which took place at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., featured three high-level panels focusing on science, policy and business/finance:

The Regulatory Landscape in 2012: How will Washington Affect the Bioscience Industry Next Year and Beyond

Financing Drug Development in Today's Environment: New Challenges and Opportunities

Speakers for the symposium came from academia, local corporations, government and trade groups, including ATCC, Biotechnology Industry Organization, Epizyme Pharmaceuticals, J. Craig Venter Institute, New Enterprise Associates, National Institutes of Health, New Leaf Venture Partners, Noble Life Sciences, Polaris Venture Partners, Stifel Nicolaus Weisel, Trevena, Virginia Commonwealth University and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

In preparation for the 2011 BIO International Convention coming to Washington, D.C., this year's Mid-Atlantic Bio Conference evolved into a half-day symposium designed to bring the bioscience and investor community together.

"Washington, D.C. is where the worlds of bioscience research, federal oversight, reimbursement and policy collide," said Renée Winsky, CEO ofThe Tech Council of Maryland (TCM), who along with Mid-Atlantic Venture Association (MAVA) and the Virginia Biotechnology Association (VaBIO) organized the symposium. "At our symposium today, hundreds of attendees heard leading experts in these disciplines discuss how the latest genetics science is transforming research and new business opportunities, how changes on Capitol Hill will impact access to capital, and the drug development challenges being faced in today's funding environment."





The Mid-Atlantic Bio Symposium, on October 12, 2011 in Washington, D.C., is co-hosted by the Tech Council of Maryland/MdBio (TCM/MdBio), the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association (MAVA), and the Virginia Biotechnology Association (VaBIO).
