NECA-IBEW Contractors Rise to Challenges of Wind Turbine-Testing Facility, a Feature of "Industry Today" on Industrialinfo.com

(firmenpresse) - SUGAR LAND, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 10/13/11 -- Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- While the NECA-IBEW team has special training facilities and programs dedicated to the installation and maintenance of wind turbines, the NECA-IBEW partnership is also contributing to the growth of wind power in other unique ways.
To help ensure the optimum and safe functioning of these massive pieces of equipment, wind turbine blades are tested at facilities such as the Wind Technology Testing Center (WTTC) at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center. All of the facility's wiring and electrical work was installed by NECA-IBEW contractors, specifically NECA contractor Dagle Electrical Construction Corporation, a member of IBEW Local 103.
The project came with a set of unique challenges, and the NECA-IBEW contractors met these head-on with outstanding results. Obstacles faced by the team included an already-poured concrete base slab, allowing the team no access underneath the foundation. NECA-IBEW safety training was apparent as the contractors installed lighting in the 86-foot-high ceiling while strong winds from the sea blew through the then-sideless building.
Rahul Yarala, executive director of the WTTC, spoke highly of the NECA-IBEW contractors. "They did a good job in spite of the challenges," said Yarala. "You could not penetrate into the concrete, so they had to go around. There's a lot of test-equipment-specific things that they could not adjust. In normal high-rise buildings or hospitals, they have some leeway, and here the tolerances were really tight."
The result is the world's largest turbine blade-testing facility, which can provide 20-year stress tests to turbine blades in a time period of about two months.
