State of Emergency in El Salvador Due to Torrential Rains

(firmenpresse) - MIAMI, FL -- (Marketwire) -- 10/20/11 -- The Salvadoran American Humanitarian Foundation (SAHF), a non-for-profit organization channeling aid from the United States to FUSAL in El Salvador, is requesting aid to help the more than 20,000 people who are currently in shelters due to the torrential rains that have occurred in El Salvador since last Tuesday, October 11th.

More than 150,000 people who live in precarious conditions in El Salvador have been affected by this natural disaster. There are currently 267 shelters housing more than 20,000 people, 38 have lost their lives, more than 18,000 homes have been damaged as well as more than 2,900 fields of basic crops have been destroyed.

"Our sister foundation in El Salvador, FUSAL has opened its warehouse to receive donations of beans, rice, hygienic products, milk, clothing, blankets, mattresses to help supply thousands of families with needed items as they face this tragic natural catastrophe. Since the beginning of this week more than 144 shipments assisting 18,000 families have been distributed in El Salvador by FUSAL," states Carlos Reyes, Executive Director of SAHF in Miami. "In the United States SAHF is appealing to the generosity of those living here to help those in need in El Salvador," added Reyes.

For the past 28 years, SAHF has raised funds to provide nearly half a billion dollars worth of medicines, medical supplies, medical equipment and educational materials from the United States for distribution in El Salvador by FUSAL. Together, SAHF and FUSAL support the work of 34 hospitals, 267 clinics, 263 health posts, 63 orphanages and nursing homes along with 91 different private voluntary organizations in El Salvador.
