Minister MacKay Delivers Remarks to the United States Military Academy at West Point
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/21/11 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, addressed students and faculty of the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point on the close bilateral security and defence relationship between Canada and the United States.
Canada and the United States are an example to the world for their close friendship, long history of cooperation on defence and security issues and a common commitment to the ideals of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. At West Point, Minister MacKay spoke about the closeness of the partnership, underlining the fact that it provides both countries with greater security than could be achieved individually.
"The strong defence and security relations between Canada and the United States reflect the unique relationship between our two nations," said Minister MacKay. "Our relationship is founded on a strong commitment to the joint defence of North America and the common values that we share. We continue to maximize our security and defence cooperation and interoperability, enabling us to effectively counter threats and grow our relationship as close allies."
Minister MacKay spoke to cadets about the longstanding relationship between the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC), where he serves as Chancellor and President, and West Point. In 1923, the two colleges established an annual sports competition that is now amongst the longest running international sporting events in the world.
While in the United States, Minister MacKay attended a roundtable speaking engagement with the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City. The Council on Foreign Relations is an independent, non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of American foreign policy. The Council also publishes Foreign Affairs, a preeminent journal of international relations and foreign policy and is the media partner for the 2011 Halifax International Security Forum, taking place from November 18th to 20th.
