Become a Stream Steward and Help Protect Waterways in Your Community

(firmenpresse) - NORTHUMBERLAND, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/24/11 -- Community members are invited to attend a free workshop delivered over two sessions in early November, presented by the Community Stream Steward Program (CSSP). Workshop participants will learn the basics of stream conservation, including stream ecology, water flow, wetlands, monitoring, and restoration techniques.

Streams are complex environments that are influenced by land use practices across the whole watershed, and as such, can undergo constant change. The health of local streams ultimately impacts water quality and the wellbeing of fish communities in connected rivers and lakes.

"Community members have the local knowledge and connection with the land which is necessary to achieve sustainable, long-term stream protection and enhancement," says CSSP Coordinator Andrea Hicks. "This training workshop will provide additional information and the techniques required for participants to become Stream Stewards in Northumberland County."

"We are pleased to be able to participate in this program with the Community Stream Steward Program," says Glenda Rodgers, General Manager of Lower Trent Conservation. "Lower Trent Conservation's objectives align perfectly with those of the program. These events provide an excellent opportunity to get the message out about Lower Trent's watershed monitoring and landowner stewardship programs."

The workshop is being hosted in partnership with Lower Trent Conservation and Wildlife Habitat Canada. The project was undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through the federal Department of the Environment.

Lunch on Saturday and dinner on Tuesday will be provided. Attendance at both sessions is strongly encouraged and registration is required. For more information or to register, please contact Andrea Hicks at (705) 748-6324 ext 253 or email .

The CSSP is a multi-partner, non-profit conservation organization that works in collaboration with landowners, volunteers and community groups to restore protect and enhance streams throughout the region. The program is hosted by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH). With over 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters, and 670 member clubs, the OFAH is the largest nonprofit fish and wildlife conservation-based organization in Ontario.
