Dreamstime Community Offers Tips on Shooting Halloween Photos
Halloween May Be a Spooky Holiday, but With Easy Tricks of the Lens You Can Produce Some Real Photo Treats

(firmenpresse) - NASHVILLE, TN -- (Marketwire) -- 10/25/11 -- With Halloween just days away, polled its community of photographers to offer tricks, treats and tips on how best to capture Halloween themed photos.
Though the spooky holiday offers spectacular opportunities to capture chilling nighttime images of goblins, jack-o-lanterns and full moons, the Dreamstime community wants to remind everyone that the keys to capturing Halloween photos are similar to those employed in everyday photography.
"Long exposure, strobe flash, and most importantly, FOG! A night out should be enough for someone with a DSLR that has manual exposure and a flash to figure these details out," said , a Dreamstime photo editor and active community member. "Remember, low speed, flash and model. You can even zoom while exposing and freeze a clear portrait when flashing."
For many, capturing the perfect spooky photo means shooting that classic symbol of Halloween: the ghost. "One fun trick for getting a 'ghostlike' appearance in a photo is to make use of rear curtain flash, slow shutter speed, and movement of the model," posted , another Dreamstime member. "In a recent photo that I took, one person sat still and a second person walked behind and smiled at the person sitting. The resulting image appears to be the ghost of one person smiling at a person in the land of the living. The process takes some work to get right, but the effect is a lot of fun and does not require Photoshop or other post processing (although some post processing is probably needed to clean up the image)."
"By using a tripod and a neutral-density filter you can take longer exposures, even in daylight," advised , another community member seeking ghost-like images. "Have someone move around in front of the camera during the long exposure. If you're in the dark, you can even just 'paint with light.' Use a flashlight and point it at the scene and use a longer shutter speed."
Another sought after Halloween photo effect is the eerie strobe-like image. "Long exposure with 'freezing' flash during the exposure can help you achieve this," said , a Dreamstime editor and community member. "The model/subject has to move, or you have to move the camera during the exposure. Multiple flashes strobe is a plus. You can also use a long exposure and fit the model in the composition at some specific places, then use a flash to 'freeze' the model."
Lastly, it's important not to forget the basics, especially if you intend to use your images on a stock photography site such as Dreamstime. offered this practical advice: "Make sure there are no logos or trademark names on the candy."
