Against Prostate Cancer
NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - October 28, 2011) - Prostate cancer expert, Dr.
David Samadi, continues his dedication to improving medical care worldwide and
increasing accessibility of medical technology by traveling to the Netherlands
this week. During his stay, he will lend his prostate cancer knowledge and
robotic surgery expertise to local specialists while performing live robotic
prostatectomy procedures. Using his SMART (Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic
Technique) Surgery, Dr. Samadi will remove the cancerous prostates of several
patients.
As Vice Chairman, Department of Urology, and Chief of Robotics and Minimally
Invasive Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, Dr. Samadi's expertise in
urology, prostate cancer, and robotic prostatectomy surgery is vast. He
routinely travels overseas to educate doctors on his life-saving, minimally
invasive robotic prostatectomy surgical techniques.
Dr. Samadi will partner with Dr. Jelle Barentsz, a specialist in MRI of
Urogenital diseases and MR-contrast agents at The Dutch Radboud University
Nijmegen Medical Center in the Netherlands where the procedures will take place.
The MR imaging used by Dr. Barentsz allows him to detect prostate cancer early
and identify its exact location and aggressiveness. Further, he believes its
microscopic clarity will be an important addition to Dr. Samadi's technique
during surgery. "The combination of our accurate MRI prostate cancer staging and
Dr. Samadi's precise robotic surgery will be a highly successful equation for
our patients. We welcome his expertise and look forward to applying his SMART
procedure in the future," said Dr. Barentsz.
A solid foundation in both open, traditional surgery and robotic surgery come
together in Dr. Samadi's unique approach to prostatectomy. Few surgeons in the
United States have successfully united the principals of laparoscopy and robotic
surgery with urologic oncology the way Dr. Samadi has. In his more than 3,600
successful robotic prostatectomy procedures, Dr. Samadi has delivered superior
results in prostate cancer cure, urinary continence and sexual potency. "Success
in robotic surgery comes from experience. I look forward to sharing my
experiences with Dr. Barentsz and his colleagues and helping them deliver
patient success," said Dr. Samadi.
Beyond experience, Dr. Samadi also attributes his success to technique. "During
surgery I am able to control the length of the urethra by not suturing the
dorsal vein complex. The longer the urethra, the better the continence results,"
Dr. Samadi explains. Reduced blood loss during surgery, shorter hospital stay
and faster recovery are also among the benefits of robotic prostatectomy
surgery.
Like in the U.S., PSA screening has undergone scrutiny in the Netherlands but
both Drs. Samadi and Barentsz share the belief that early detection of prostate
cancer is the key to saving lives.
While in the Netherlands, Dr. Samadi will perform multiple, live robotic
prostatectomy surgeries as a means of training surgeons there. "Dr. Samadi's
teachings here in the Netherlands will begin a new era in our fight against
prostate cancer," said Dr. Barentsz.
