(firmenpresse) - HOUSTON, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 11/01/11 -- An athlete's complete resource center, the , is now home to the newly accredited Primary Care Sports Medicine (PCSM) Fellowship program, under which one Fellow will spend a year learning about the unique needs of the athletic population.

In addition to the things typically associated with sports medicine, such as sprains and strains, as well as fractures and dislocations, Primary Care Sports Medicine also involves the medical care of active patients. Concussions, asthma, heart problems, diabetes and nutrition are among the issues on which Primary Care Sports Medicine doctors focus.

The program received accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) through a peer review process and thorough evaluation of established standards and guidelines. There are 111 accredited programs around the country. This is one of only two programs in the greater Houston area.

Dr. Scott Rand, the Fellowship program director, will oversee all aspects of training and education that the Fellows receive including: experience treating a broad range of injuries and conditions -- from musculoskeletal injuries to brain injuries and acute as well as chronic illnesses; computerized neuropsychological testing in concussion management; electrophysiology; and other elective rotations in ski trauma, cardiology, hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery and neuropsychology.

"This program will not only enhance the sports medicine services offered at the center but also equip future physicians with the multidisciplinary skills and understanding to treat 'the athlete,' not just the injury or condition," said Rand.

"In order to truly care for an active person, you must understand the effect that exercise has on the body and on disease processes and you must also understand how different disease processes affect an athlete's ability to exercise safely. This is an innovative approach to treating athletes and the active in our society. The goal of Primary Care Sports Medicine is to utilize multiple tools to help athletes reach their full potential physically, as well as treat the overall individual for a safe return to sports. We are fortunate to be part of an organization that supports this initiative," added Rand.

Treating all ages and skill levels in the sports medicine clinic, from recreational athletes and weekend warriors to Olympic and professional athletes, the PCSM Fellows will also learn EMG interpretation, the use of rehabilitative medicine in treating injuries and osteopathic manipulation techniques.

According to Chief Executive Officer Beryl Ramsey, the new Fellowship program underscores the hospital's commitment to helping physicians emphasize within the healthcare industry through innovation and education.

"We are pleased to have someone with Dr. Rand's experience directing this new Fellowship program and leading the next generation of primary care sports medicine physicians," said Ramsey.

"The Primary Care Sports Medicine Program sets the orthopedic and sports medicine center apart from any other in northwest Houston," added Ramsey.

The Center is home to some of the best board-certified and fellowship trained in Houston with subspecialties in hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, hip and spine, as well as orthopedic sports and primary care sports medicine.
