Admission to the list of trademarks well-known in Finland isby application.The NBPR initiated the List of Trademarks with a Reputation in August2007. The list is public and aims to provide information and helpavoid trademark disputes. Admission to the list is based on strongevidence of a trademark's wide recognition in Finland. In addition toKesko, there are currently 36 brands on the list, including Pirkka,the K-sign, Paulig and Finlayson.Kesko has been part of the Finnish society since 1941. Kesko'sbusiness started when four regional wholesaling companies that hadbeen founded by retailers were merged. The name 'Kesko' was inventedby then Managing Director E.J. Railo. The word in itself does notmean anything in Finnish, but phonetically it resembles the Finnishword for concentration (keskittyminen), which in this case referredto the concentration of four regional wholesalers into one nationwideoperator, combining their purchasing power to ensure lower prices andhigher availability of goods.Today Kesko operates in eight countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway,Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus.
