Dr. Howard Gimbel, the father of many current cataract surgery techniques and one of the top ophthalmic surgeons in the world, has taken his surgical skill and passion for teaching to YouTube, offering video instruction on routine as well as complex cataract surgery techniques to surgeons worldwide.
A pioneer of many innovative surgical practices and techniques, Dr. Gimbel has selected more than 100 videos of actual surgeries he has performed that have unique teaching value, and created a learning library for other surgeons. The library is available at
The Gimbel Library has been a wonderful way for me to extend my teaching opportunities beyond the operating room, the classroom, or the conference room," says Dr. Gimbel. "It's a legacy of learning from me to future generations - with the goal of improving outcomes for tens of thousands of patients around the world."
For the past 30 years, Dr. Gimbel has captured on video almost every surgery he has performed - more than 60,000 in total - for their potential teaching value. As a lifelong learner and educator, he has presented these videos at conferences and classrooms, even broadcasting some of his surgeries live via satellite to surgeons worldwide at international ophthalmic meetings. Dr. Gimbel remains one of the busiest and most sought-after surgeons, often handling the most complicated and technically challenging cases. Past and present videos are a valuable resource to surgeons who are able to search videos related to specific topics and review them online, in their own time.
Dr. Gimbel was inspired to create a YouTube channel to help other surgeons who may not have regular access to this knowledge gain from his experience. Over the past 22 months, the Gimbel Library has received over 55,000 views by people from more than 30 countries on all major continents. Users have reported that the videos have enhanced their surgical and patient skills and helped them prepare for particularly challenging cases.
Dr. Pawan Tiwari, a practicing ophthalmologist from India, is a subscriber to the Library. The Library is made available through the work of the Gimbel Eye Foundation, a charitable organization focused on enhancing the science and art of medical eye care for surgeons and their patients around the world. The Gimbel Foundation will continue to add to the Library by editing and uploading more archived videos and adding new videos as technology, experience, and techniques change. Gimbel Eye Foundation presents the video library for free and is funded primarily by donations from patients who appreciate the care received by Dr. GImbel and who want to help make the gift of sight available to others.
