PRESS RELEASE

Venice, 9 November 2001

Making public transport part of a modern urban lifestyle?
Yes we can!

Within the context of economic downturn and sovereign debt crisis, the
conference organized by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP)
and hosted by Actv and Vela in Venice (7-8 November), entitled "Making public
transport part of a modern urban lifestyle? Yes we can!", confirmed an urgent
need for change. Experts from around the world demonstrated how it is possible
in front of 200 participants coming from 30 countries.

In 2009, UITP launched its "PTx2" strategy aiming at doubling the public
transport market share worldwide by 2025 with the vision of making cities better
places to live and work. By bringing people to work and enabling vibrant
economic activity in cities, public transport contributes to economic growth.
Therefore, PTx2 is not an option, it is a must. One of the strategic axes to
achieve this ambition is to make public transport the citizen's preferred
transport mode.

Modern urban society and lifestyle create new needs and new habits. Citizens
compare transport performance with other services from other sectors. They
expect mobility solutions, not just a trip, that is quick, safe, convenient,
clean and affordable, with good information. They also expect greater
consideration and individual recognition.

The need for change

To be attractive and competitive to other modes in the mobility market, public
transport companies need to respond to citizen's expectations. Thus, they need
to invest in the development of new services and the improvement of existing
networks, while putting customers at the centre of the corporate strategy.

"Change in the public transport sector means providing satisfactory services
fitting smoothly in a modern lifestyle rather than delivering a technical
product." said Hans Rat, Secretary General of UITP. "It implies a corporate
change, new human resources practices, strategic reorganization to make room for
entrepreneurship, business development attitudes and customer-orientation."
