Parks Canada announces contribution for infrastructure improvements

(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/09/11 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety and Member of Parliament for Provencher, today announced that the Government of Canada will be investing in infrastructure improvements at Dalnavert National Historic Site.

"On behalf of Minister Kent, I am very pleased to announce this funding for Dalnavert National Historic Site," said Minister Toews. "Dalnavert represents an interesting and important part of architectural history, and also has strong links to Sir Hugh John Macdonald, the son of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald."

Dalnavert is a two-and-a-half-storey red-brick house with a large wooden verandah in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba. Designed by Charles H. Wheeler, Dalnavert was built for Sir Hugh John Macdonald, Premier of Manitoba in 1899 and 1900. The residence was designated a national historic site in 1990 because it is a particularly good example of Queen Anne Revival architecture. It is now operated as the Dalnavert Museum.

Through Parks Canada's National Historic Sites Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada will be contributing up to $18,997 for conservation work on the historic house's verandah.

"One of our Government's major objectives is to inspire Canadians to develop strong and meaningful connections with Canada's national treasures," said Minister Kent. "Our national historic sites are vital to our history, our identity as Canadians, and our tourism industry. By investing in them and by building lasting relationships with the community groups that operate them, we ensure that they will continue to help support local economies and encourage more Canadians to explore and discover our national heritage."

"Dalnavert is truly a historic gem for Winnipeg and all of Canada," said Dr. Annabelle Mays, President of the Manitoba Historical Society, which owns and operates Dalnavert Museum. "The investment by the Government of Canada will do much to help us conserve this important piece of our history."

The Cost-Sharing Program reflects Parks Canada's efforts to protect Canada's heritage through funding towards the conservation of national historic sites. In this centennial year, Parks Canada is pleased to continue its efforts to ensure that Canada's historical and natural heritage is protected for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future.
