RCAF to Conduct Flybys in NCR for Remembrance Day

ID: 86144

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/09/11 -- The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) will conduct a series of flybys in the National Capital Region (NCR) Friday, flown by a seven-ship formation of CH-146 Griffon helicopters and a two-ship formation of CF-188 Hornet fighters.

The varied flybys will take place over several venues including the National War Memorial and the Beechwood National Cemetery in Ottawa, as well as over the municipalities of Orleans, Russell and Alexandria.

A rehearsal for the Griffon flights will take place between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on November 10, with the official flybys happening between 10:30 a.m. and noon on November 11. The aircraft will conduct all flybys at an altitude no lower than 500 feet above the highest point in their flight path before resuming a higher flying altitude for the return to their home bases. Flybys by CF aircraft are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure public safety at all times.

The RCAF is honoured to participate in the NCR's Remembrance Day ceremonies. These flybys hold a special significance for the men and women serving today, as they pay tribute to the ongoing efforts of the Canadian Forces to contribute to international peace and security, and to defend Canada and North America.

The seven-Griffon helicopter formation pays specific tribute to the Canadian Forces mission in Afghanistan and the two Hornet fighters serve to represent Canada's recent contribution in helping protect civilians in Libya, as well as our continued North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) operations.
