As part of activities to mark Remembrance Day, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, welcomed the Kin Canada Portraits of Honour mural to Parliament Hill today. This mural, created by artist Dave Sopha, contains the portraits of Canadian Forces members who lost their lives in Afghanistan.
"As Canadians, it is our responsibility to ensure that we actively remember and express our gratitude to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of peace, freedom, democracy, and the rule of law," said Minister Blaney. "The Portraits of Honour mural provides Canadians here in the nation's capital with another fitting opportunity to pay tribute to our nation's truest heroes on the 11th day of the 11th month, at the 11th hour."
Kin Canada has taken this 10' x 40' mural to approximately 99 communities across the country since May 2011 to encourage Canadians to become more engaged in remembrance. The Government of Canada has contributed $100,000 toward the tour through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund (CEPF).
"Our Government is proud to support projects that pay tribute to the many brave Canadians who have given this country an invaluable legacy of valour, patriotism and self-sacrifice," said Minister Blaney. "This is the third time in recent weeks that I've had the privilege of seeing this tribute and it moves me every time."
