Nutrition North Canada Food List Announced

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/17/11 -- The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development today announced the list of items to be subsidized under Nutrition North Canada effective October 1, 2012.
"With continued guidance from the Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board, we are pleased to be releasing today the list of items that will be subsidized as part of the Nutrition North Canada program," said Minister Duncan. "The subsidized food list is designed to support increased access to nutritious and perishable food to Northerners."
Subsidized items will include nutritious and perishable store-bought foods as well as country or traditional foods when available through local stores or when purchased from processing plants that are registered with the program. Foods eligible for subsidy were selected based on advice from Health Canada and discussions with the Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board. The list of subsidized items will be reviewed annually.
"The Government of Canada remains committed to providing Northerners with healthy food choices through the Nutrition North Canada program," said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health. "This list covers a broad range of foods that are typical of the northern diet, including country foods".
As part of the Nutrition North Canada program, nutrition education initiatives are underway in many communities and include cooking classes, knowledge sharing on country or traditional foods between elders and youth and healthy food tastings in local stores. The Government of Canada encourages Northerners to plan and prepare for their food needs and to use sealift and winter roads where possible to maximize their cost savings.
The Government of Canada also continues to provide information about Nutrition North Canada through consumer and retail-targeted mailings, advertising, Web-based and social media updates and notices.
Nutrition North Canada is delivered in 103 remote, northern communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario Quebec, Saskatchewan and Yukon. The program was launched on April 1, 2011 to replace the Food Mail Program. An 18 month transition period was put in place until October 1, 2012 to give Northerners and retailers and suppliers more time to adjust to the new program.
