Check Your Pipes Advises the AA

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 11/17/11 -- With the average temperature in Britain since December 1, 2010 sitting at minus 1C(i), the welcome lull in the freezing conditions is the ideal time to check your water pipes, says the AA. The current thaw is causing an increase in the number of burst pipes across the UK and this is likely to rise further with more freezing temperatures forecast.
Tom Stringer, the AA's head of home rescue says, "A burst pipe is one of the worst home emergencies because of the additional damage it can cause to furniture, decoration and even the structure of your property.
"If the pipes in your loft or any other exposed areas are not insulated, they can freeze really quickly in sub-zero temperatures. It's definitely worth getting up there and checking that the insulation is adequate and in place - a tiny gap can still cause that section of pipe to freeze, particularly if it's in a draft."
Burst pipes were responsible for up to 51% more insurance claims to the AA in last winter's cold snap that lasted through to February 2010.
The damage and distress a burst pipe causes makes it one of the most feared emergencies - either in the home or on the road - with more than three-quarters (76%) of 18,251 AA members in a recent AA/Populus poll(ii) rating it one of the worst imaginable scenarios.
To help prevent frozen pipes, the advises:
