Minister Duncan Announces New Measures Toward Improved Water Services in Island Lake First Nations

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/17/11 -- The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, today announced an investment of $5.5 million toward improving water and waste water services in the four Island Lake First Nations.
"We are committed to improving the quality of life for First Nations people across Canada," said Minister Duncan. "This investment means that Island Lake communities will be better placed to take advantage of the upcoming winter road season for shipping equipment and materials."
Specific priorities will be determined in collaboration with First Nation leadership and are anticipated to include the procurement of building materials for retrofitting of homes and provision of additional equipment such as water and septic trucks.
"This announcement represents an important step towards improving access to safe drinking water in the four Island Lake communities," said Minister Toews. "Our Government remains committed to working with Manitoba First Nations and the province of Manitoba to address this important issue. This is another concrete step in the right direction."
Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) has made significant investments to improve water and wastewater systems on reserves across the country. Since 2006, more than $2.5 billion has been invested in First Nation water and wastewater infrastructure, including more than $55 million in the Island Lake communities.
The Government of Canada also remains committed to introducing safe drinking water legislation that will be designed to ensure that First Nations have the same health and safety protection for drinking water in their communities as do other Canadians.
The four Island Lake First Nations are Garden Hill, St. Theresa, Wasagamack, and Red Sucker Lake.
