Arsenic waste from Neste Oil to be sent to Ekokem for final disposal
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Drums of waste contaminated with arsenic stored at Neste Oil'sNaantali refinery site are to be sent for disposal to Ekokem, whichrecycles, neutralizes, and disposes of a wide range of hazardous andother industrial waste. The first batch of 200 drums will be sent toEkokem's treatment plant at Pori this year, and the remainder by May2010. Neste Oil has a total of 756 drums of this type of waste instorage. The arsenic waste is a by-product of the hydrogen gas scrubbingprocess used at Neste Oil's Porvoo refinery in the early 1970s. Wastefrom the process, together with contaminated pipework, boards, andcotton waste, was packed in drums, which were eventually transportedto Naantali for storage. They were placed in an on-site warehouse fortheir first year there, after which they were encapsulated inconcrete and transferred to the adjacent Tupavuori storage area."The drums have survived the long storage period very well and havenot posed a threat to the environment at any stage. All the same, weare pleased that we can now draw a line under the case and send themfor final disposal by Ekokem, a highly respected hazardous wastetreatment specialist," says Timo Tunturi, Communications Manager atthe Naantali refinery.Neste Oil CorporationHanna MaulaDirector, Corporate CommunicationsFurther information:Communications Manager Timo Tunturi, tel. +358 (0)50 458 6251Environmental Engineer Caj Karlsson, tel. +358 (0)50 458 6577Neste Oil in briefNeste Oil Corporation is a refining and marketing companyconcentrating on low-emission, high-quality traffic fuels.
